NEW YORK ASBESTOS CERTIFICATION

Exposure to asbestos can cause dangerous disease of lung cancer called mesothelioma. This is why various agencies like OSHA and EPA have issued New York regulations for asbestos control. According to New York State regulations, professionals working with asbestos containing materials need to first acquire asbestos certification by attending specialised training programs designed for this purpose.

Asbestos Certified Technicians in NY State

New York Department of Labor (DOL) manages the licensing and certification of NY asbestos contractors and individual technicians. There are nine types of individual certifications offered to individuals, with different certifications for different roles performed in asbestos projects, as shown below:

  • Handler – A handler is a person who actually works on the removal, encapsulation etc. of asbestos wastes in the project.
  • Restricted handler – A restricted handler works on limited tasks which are supplementary to an asbestos project, such as a carpenter, electrician, plumber etc.
  • Inspector – Asbestos inspection involves tasks like identification of asbestos, assessment of its condition, collection of bulk samples for asbestos testing etc.
  • Supervisor – A person who supervises asbestos abatement projects and is allowed to enter the work area
  • Management planner – The management planner assesses the risk involved in the project and accordingly prepares work plan and schedule for execution
  • Project designer – The designer defines the scope of the job, time plan, phasing and remediation methods to be used in the project
  • Project monitor – The monitor oversees the project execution with respect to its scope, timing and remediation methods.
  • Air sampling technician – A person who enters the area to take air samples in the work area with asbestos.
  • Operation & maintenance worker – A person who performs minor operation, maintenance and repair activities in the project.

Asbestos Certification Classes in New York

In order to obtain an individual certification issued by DOL, one must complete the New York State Department of Health (DOH) accredited asbestos certification training program. These New York asbestos training programs are conducted through several organisations and are considered to be valid only if they meet the requirements established by DOH. This course requires an annual refresher. A refresher consists of a session of eight hours for some certifications and four hours for others.
