New York Students concern about mesothelioma and asbestos exposure

Located in New York, Brooklyn, Lafayette High School building is one of the buildings where asbestos was used when the construction was made.

Asbestos is a natural mineral that was widely used in construction between `30 and `70 until asbestos has been banned at the beginning of the `80.

It is also known that asbestos mineral is a dangerous material and if exposed to asbestos fibers, it may cause mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma cancer is a rare form of cancer and it is very aggressive.

Students at Lafayette High School where exposed to asbestos just after a contractor working in the school ripped out asbestos wrapped pipe. In that moment all the student and teachers in the school where exposed directly to this harmful material.

The contractor working in the school did not notify the teachers and the students about the possible risk to be exposed to asbestos, the main cause of developing a terrible form of cancer named mesothelioma cancer. He also walked on the hallways and trough the school caring asbestos containing materials. Student may have been exposed to asbestos when simply walked in to their classrooms.

When working with materials containing asbestos, measures of safety must be token otherwise people’s health can be damaged and can cause them serious cancer tumors. US APA says that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure. People who handle this type of materials have to notify the persons around about the risk of exposure.

More than 3,000 people every year are diagnosed with mesothelioma, in the United States. Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer and it is very dangerous because after being exposed it can take up to 40 years for the mesothelioma symptoms to show up.

Because most of the patients are diagnosed after the disease has reached the final phase, most of them die in less then two years.

The Educational Department has started an investigation over this situation and they also demanded an air study to determine the quality of air. The United Federation of Teachers has expressed distress over the situation and they are waiting for the results of the investigation.
