NYC Asbestos Inspector Sentenced For Fraud

A former New York City building safety inspector named Saverio Todaro was sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison. He was fined $450,000 as the mesothelioma settlement amount for the victims of his fraud. He was found guilty for filing false asbestos inspection reports which led to asbestos exposure to the workers of the buildings.

Mr. Todaro entered a guilty plea in March to charges of falsifying documents, violating federal environmental regulations, and committing mail fraud. Mr. Todaro was the building safety inspector from 2001 to 2009. He filed five hundred asbestos inspection reports during this period of time but he didn’t order any test which was required for the older buildings.

Judge Kimba Wood sentenced Mr. Todaro. She said that the sentence “needs to send a message” to other inspectors who may consider taking such shortcuts. She called the inspectors “guardians of the public trust” and described Mr. Todaro’s actions as showing “callousness” that risked lives. The judge also said that the punishment may have been harsh than the present one but it was the poor health of Mr. Todaro and the status of his family which gave him some relief in the punishment. The age Mr. Todaro is 68 and he suffers from respiratory disorder so he uses oxygen tank to help in his breathing phenomenon. Mr. Todaro uses a wheelchair for his mobility. As far as his family is concerned, he has got a mentally disabled son. The case of Mr. Tordaro led to a multi- agency investigation on the inspection process of older buildings in the city. This case also exposed the New York City’s methods of supervision and enforcement of building inspection.
