Mesothelioma Symptoms & Patients in New York

Asbestos exposure can be the cause of serious illnesses which usually come with a set of symptoms. The largest issue with asbestos related diseases, such as mesothelioma, is the fact that the symptoms exhibited by the patient are not specific to that disease; in fact they are seen together with common health disorders, such as the flu or a cold.

Malignant mesothelioma symptoms

Malignant mesothelioma is described as an asbestos caused cancer that remains latent for several years before causing the first symptoms. Just to have an idea, here the more common symptoms mesothelioma patients will experience in the initial phase:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest or abdomen pain (depending on the type of mesothelioma, a certain amount of fluid develops in the chest or abdomen)
  • Weight loss is quite common between cancer symptoms
  • Mesothelioma cancer could cause swelling of the face in some situations

In any case, we recommend seeing a doctor as soon as the first symptoms start to appear. It is easier to treat if mesothelioma is discovered sooner in its development.

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms

Mesothelioma of the pleura has almost all of the above mentioned symptoms, but because this type of mesothelioma originates in the lungs, you will experience chest pain. This type of mesothelioma cancer is one of the most common ones and having a specific symptom to detect makes it easier for a doctor to detect the disease itself and start scanning for any tumors.

Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms

Mesothelioma of the peritoneum (the sack surrounding the abdominal cavity) also has all the symptoms mentioned earlier, apart from the fact that the pain felt by the patient will be located in the abdominal area due to the build up of fluid in that area. Pleural or peritoneal effusion is common to almost all mesothelioma patients. This symptom causes pain and can be treated by an operation to extract the excess fluid.

There are also other, less harmful, types of mesothelioma. One such type is benign mesothelioma, where the cancerous tissue is present, but is not active and will not spread to attack healthy cells. Benign mesothelioma symptoms do not include any of the above mentioned ones; in fact benign mesothelioma might not even cause any symptoms.

Treatment can start as soon as the first symptoms are discovered, but not before a complete set of tests and a clear and accurate diagnosis. Ask your doctor for all the information you require.
